Petawawa Stags make CF soccer history

By Kristin Wood

2006 CF National - 3 Final Game

The Petawawa Stags have become the first five-time CF National Soccer Champions. Their victory came at the 2006 CF National Soccer Championships, which took place October 1 to 5 at CFB Borden.

After receiving a bit of a break on the first goal during their final game, Petawawa played very disciplined soccer. The Gagetown Warriors pushed up offensively to try to tie the game, but couldn’t penetrate the defence of the Stags. In the end, Petawawa dominated the soccer pitch, winning the game 2-0.

Corporal Ed Chipman, player and coach of the Petawawa Stags, says this year’s national tournament was the hardest for his team for several reasons. “I’ve played and coached Petawawa for the past four years and each year the other teams get better and better,” says Cpl Chipman. “For us older guys, our motivation was to prove we could do it again. I think the younger guys—11 of whom it was their first time at a CF National tournament—feed off us, and that drove them to step up their game.”
