As a deployed civilian, you will work for and be under the operational control of the Task Force Commander. The term of the deployment varies. A typical deployment is six months

The following is a brief description for each position.

Administration/Special Events Coordinator

Working under the direction of the Welfare Manager, the Administration/Special Events Coordinator is responsible for office coordination, as well as the day-to-day administrative and HR activities in support of managers, supervisors and staff. The Administration/Special Events Coordinator also oversees employee files, prepares employee status reports, maintains document control, distributes employee-based information, drafts and maintains administrative instructions and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and communicates all necessary information to the Deployed Operations Cell. The incumbent coordinates special events such as CF Show Tours, the Terry Fox run, visits from CFPSA personnel, Op SANTA CLAUS, Canada Day, other Canadian national holiday celebrations, and one-day excursions (when applicable). He/she is also responsible for the distribution of press and media products.

Accounting Coordinator

Working under the direction of the Welfare Manager, the Accounting Coordinator is responsible for the accurate and prompt recording of NPF financial transactions and statements, utilizing Abbacus and various MS software.

Barber

Working under the Operations Manager, the Barber is responsible for cutting, trimming and styling hair/beard and moustache according to preference of customers, or according to particular style, using combs, brushes, clippers (hand or electric), scissors and razors.

Equipment and Resources Coordinator

Working under the direction of the Operations Manager, the Equipment and Resources Coordinator is responsible for controlling and maintaining physical fitness equipment, audio and video equipment, maintenance contracts, employee uniforms, and consumer items.

Fitness, Sports, and Recreation Coordinator

Working under the direction of the Operations Manager, the Fitness, Sports and Recreation Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the camp sports facility, as well as conducting daily fitness programs, coordinating sporting events, assisting with special event activities, and issuing athletic and sports equipment. In addition, the coordinator assists in starting up club activities. He/she will work closely with the Administration/Special Events Coordinator and the Equipment and Resource Coordinator.

Invoice Clerk

Working under the direction of the Retail Manager, the Invoice Clerk receives, verifies and processes invoices, transfers and requests for credit documentation in preparation for payment or crediting by the NPF accounts section. They also reconcile invoices to completed purchase orders and calculate or verify the cost/retail extensions. The Invoice Clerk enters data into computer registers, prepares reports, maintains a filing system, prepares and balances daily sales reports, and ensures monthly close off procedures are completed in a timely manner.

Operations Manager

Working under the direction of the Welfare Manager, the Operations Manager is responsible for the overall management of Personnel Support Programs (PSP) and services, including special event planning, trips, recreation clubs, fitness and sports facilities, equipment management, travel and barber services. The incumbent plans, develops, directs and manages PSP programs and services (morale and welfare, entertainment and amenities programs), and is responsible for the efficient, effective, and responsive management of a diverse group of activities. They also coordinate the CFPSA Health and Safety Program, as well as the Contingent Fund, providing advice and guidance to the CFPSA Welfare Manager and various committees and councils. The Operations Manager is also responsible for related HR, financial, budget, and resource management.

Retail Attendant

Working under the direction of the Retail Operations Supervisor, the Retail Attendant is responsible for providing a high level of customer service at a Tim Hortons outlet, various retail stores, canteens and messes. He/She is responsible for completing the sale, ensuring the correct amount of payment is received from the customer, operating a cash register and properly presenting and/or wrapping the customer's merchandise. The Retail Attendant is also responsible for the daily housekeeping of the outlets, as well as ensures proper merchandising and rotation of the product. This position may involve some baking as directed by supervisor.

Retail Manager

Working under the direction of the Welfare Manager, the Retail Manager is responsible for planning, organizing, directing and controlling all aspects of retail purchasing and distribution operations. In addition to ensuring that warehousing, distribution, and elevated retail services are provided, the Retail Manager adheres to policies, practices and procedures, including sales, pricing, purchasing, inventory control, merchandising, promotions, HR, financial and resource management, health and safety, security, training, and customer service. The Retail Manager is responsible for all retail employees, products and services.

Retail Operations Supervisor/Task Force Buyer

Working under the direction of the Site Manager, the Retail Operations Supervisor/Task Force Buyer is responsible for all purchasing and sourcing of merchandise for the retail outlets. He/She will meet with suppliers, negotiate prices, place orders, verify stock, prepare necessary paperwork and arrange shipments. The Retail Operations Supervisor/Buyer is also responsible for the efficient, effective day-to-day operation of a retail store. This includes the scheduling and supervision of cashiers, inventory control as well as preparing and reconciling the required reports and paperwork.

Retail Operations Supervisor - Tim Hortons

Working under the direction of the Retail Manager, the  Retail Operations Supervisor - Tim Hortons is responsible for the efficient and effective operation of the Tim Hortons outlet in Kandahar. He/She is responsible for maintaining appropriate inventory levels and ordering from Canada as required. The Retail Operations Supervisor - Tim Hortons will ensure the Shift Leaders are scheduling staff according to demand, and ensures a clean and inviting environment is maintained for customers. He/She resolves all customer complaints and ensures orders are filled as required. The Retail Operations Supervisor - Tim Hortons is responsible for completing the Daily Sales Reports (DSR) for Tim Hortons, and for ensuring deposits are made daily to the Task Force NPF Accounting Coordinator.

Shipping and Receiving Coordinator

Working under the direction of the Retail Manager, the Shipping and Receiving Coordinator is responsible for shipping, receiving, and processing incoming and outgoing merchandise, controlling, maintaining inventories, as well as packing, ordering transport, and preparing the appropriate paperwork.

Travel Coordinator

Working under the direction of the Travel Supervisor, the Travel Coordinator oversees the HLTA program and R&R travel arrangements for all program users, including the production of travel portfolios (planners, itineraries, client file, and claims), provides commercial airline tickets, departure assistance, and maintenance of the travel database.

Welfare Manager

Working under the direction of the Task Force Commander, the Welfare Manager plans, develops, directs and oversees the management of all programs and services for military personnel. The Welfare Manager is responsible for the efficient, effective and responsive management of a diverse group of social, morale and welfare services, including leave travel programs, Retail outlets, Unit Fund activities, fitness, sports and recreation programs, and sports and recreation councils and clubs. The Welfare Manager also ensures effective resource and program management, including financial, HR, equipment, and welfare programs that conform to national CFPSA and CF standards. He/She also act as the executive director of the Contingent Fund, providing advice and guidance to the Task Force Commander and various committees and councils.

  1. Check the website for available positions

    Keep checking our website. We announce openings approximately twice a year. We also advertise openings in selected newspapers with a wide circulation, including base/wing newspapers.

    In view of the high number of applications we receive, we ask you to apply only when openings are advertised. Only those candidates who have the necessary skills and qualifications will be contacted by the HR Manager.

  2. Ensure your qualifications match the required skills

    We strongly encourage the submission of résumés from all interested parties who meet the required skill sets. But meeting employment requirements is only the starting point. The process may seem rigorous, but this is necessary due to the nature of the challenge. It is an unconventional and non-traditional work week. Deployed Operations personnel functions in unique social and environmental conditions that support military operations outside of Canada.

    All selected candidates must be able to:

    • Undergo a screening process that includes medical and dental evaluations and a psychosocial interview.
    • During the medical/dental evaluation, it is essential that you bring any health concerns to the attention of the Medical or Dental Officer.
    • The psychosocial component involves an interview with a social worker with the option of including your partner. The purpose of this interview is to examine the impact of deployment on you and your family.
    • Attend a paid two-week pre-deployment training and selection course. This course is an integral part of the final selection process.
    • Show proof of Canadian citizenship.
    • Hold a valid First-Aid and CPR certificate (personal/financial responsibility).
    • Pass a federal government Enhanced Reliability and Credit Check.
    • Demonstrate desired skill sets for the positions(s) applied for.
    • Work proficiently in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, Access,Excel). The accounting position also requires advanced experience with the Automated Base Accounting Control and Information Systems (ABACIS).
    • Supporting documentation may be required to prove computer skills (formal computer training certificates or a letter of attestation from the current/previous employer(s) would be acceptable examples of documentation).
    • Lift or move up to 25 kg of retail stock as required.
    • Operate a forklift (Equipment and Resources Coordinator, and Shipping and Receiving Coordinator positions).
    • Hold a valid driver's permit. There are some positions where personnel may be required to drive in the performance of their duties. Potential employees will be notified of this requirement during the pre-deployment training and selection course.
    • Communicate orally and in writing in English, or fluently in both of Canada's official languages as specified.
    • Provide a copy of your birth certificate (or certificate of Canadian Citizenship if you were born outside Canada).

  4. Wait to be contacted by HR

    Congratulations to successful candidates who pass the initial phase of selection - the résumé screening process. We receive many résumés from highly qualified candidates. Potential candidates will be contacted directly by our Deployment HR Manager after the competition closes. Please do not phone us. We thank you in advance for your interest.

  5. Suitability interview

    Suitability interviews will be conducted by phone, or during the training and selection course. This interview gives the CFPSA Deployed Operations team an opportunity to assess your general suitability in relation to your aptitude, motivation, attitude, and skills. Candidates who have reached this point in the screening process have demonstrated employment potential. Please remember that this is a selection process. Successful suitability is required to continue the process.

  6. HR sends out a pre-deployment documentation package

    Once you have been selected for training, you will receive a HR documentation package to complete. You must then submit further documentation to satisfy our requirements. This includes:

    • a list of professional references
    • a copy of your current First Aid/CPR certificate
    • a copy of your current Canadian passport
    • a copy of your provincial driver's license
    • a copy of your birth certificate (or certificate of Canadian Citizenship if you were born outside Canada)
    • requests to further document your skill sets
    • completion of the screening assessment form

    If you do not have all the documentation right away please continue to complete it, and continue with the selection process.

  7. Screening Assessment Form and reference checks

    The Deployment HR Manager will send selected candidates the necessary documentation, including a screening form to be completed by DND/CF professionals at the nearest military base. The process will be explained to you in the package. The screening process ensures your medical, dental, and psychological status is appropriate for operational deployment and employment outside Canada. Once you have completed and returned these forms to the Deployment HR Manager, additional selection and training information will follow. If a referral to a civilian specialist is required to verify your status, this is your financial and personal responsibility. For example, if you require dental work to satisfy the dental screening process, this will be your personal and financial obligation.

    The reference check involves interviewing your references, verification of all personal information, a criminal record check and credit check.

  8. The Training and Selection Course

    Successful candidates will receive detailed administrative instructions prior to the start of the training and selection course. The pre-deployment training and selection course is a prerequisite for first-time employees. Former deployed employees might be required to attend the full 2-week course or a refresher course. Only those who qualify and have successfully completed all previous stages will be invited to the pre-deployed training and selection course. The two-week in-house course takes place in Kingston, ON. It is designed to integrate your current skills with the position for which you have applied, and provide you with an understanding and appreciation of the social and emotional conditions inherent in a military deployed operation. The course will be mentally and emotionally challenging. You are required to attend in-depth briefings from military and CFPSA experts. Topics include CF policies and procedures, CF culture, deployed local culture, CFPSA rules and regulations, stress management, and many more. Team dynamics, adaptation to stress and the environment are all areas in which you will be assessed. The briefings continue into the evening with classes or team building activities. Hard work lends itself to rest and relaxation, so the CFPSA staff plans many enjoyable activities to complement the hard work. Training may include a combination of guest speakers, videos, paper and practical exercises and workshops. Employees currently deployed assist with the course and provide information on current work practices, employment and living conditions. During your training you will form many lasting friendships and accomplish tasks you never thought you could do. There is a formal dinner upon completion of the course to honour the candidates for their accomplishments. At any time throughout the course, you may decide that deployed operations employment is not for you and request to go home.

  9. Offer of employment

    The final selection of candidates is based on the results of the overall selection process. An official offer of employment is made following the training and selection course. Position assignment and potential deployment dates are discussed at that time. The Deployed Operations team assigns placements according to the candidate's personality, maturity, strengths, talents, experiences, areas of interest, flexibility, adaptability, comfort zone and level of responsibility. Due to high volumes of operational activity, you may not know your final camp destination until you are deployed. There may also be camp relocations due to operational requirements. We may not have immediate openings for all candidates, so some personnel may receive a conditional offer of employment. Not all candidates will necessarily receive an offer of employment.
