Each year current and former DND/CF personnel and their families are encouraged to submit photos which depict aspects of military life to the DND Photography Contest for a chance to win more than $20,000 in prizes. The purpose of the contest is to encourage the creation of imagery and to recognize those members of the military community who have attained a level of excellence in the art of photography. The DND Photography Contest has been running since 1968 and is organized by the Canadian Forces Joint Imagery Centre and the Canadian Forces Personnel and Family Support Services.

Divided into professional and amateur categories, photos must be submitted by October 1, 2011 to qualify for one of eight categories: military life, family life, sport, environment, animals, portrait, special effects and open. Judging occurs on October 19-20.
