DND Photography Contest History

The DND Photography Contest has been run since 1968 and was originally part of an arts and crafts competition sponsored by Physical Education and Recreation personnel. The early contest was organized and run by CFB Uplands PERI staff and the winning entries were displayed at the Air Movements Unit.

Due to lack of interest most of the competition was discontinued in 1972. Only the photography part remained. In 1987, the present format was adopted by Director Physical Education, Recreation and Amenities (DPERA). The first display of winning entries on the concourse of NDHQ, 101 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa, was held in 1988.

Today, the contest is organized by Canadian Forces Imaging Services of the Chief of Defense Intelligence and the CF Personnel and Family Support Services, under the auspices of the Deputy Minister of National Defense.

The contest is an artistic endeavour considered to be a recreational activity in which all members of DND, including families, may participate.

The purpose of the contest is to encourage the creation of imagery which depicts the many aspects of life in the military; and to recognize those members of the military community who have attained a level of excellence in the art of photography.

The reward to participants and winners is recognition among their peers. Additionally, outstanding accomplishments are recognized by the awarding of prizes generously donated by a number of Canadian companies.
