Sonia Rowe
Senior Manager National Programs and Services
Sonia was born and raised in Trois-Rivières, Québec. She began her post-secondary education by completing a CEGEP program in Law and Psychology. After one year in Law at Laval University, she went on to complete her degree in Psychology with a minor in Political Science at Mount Saint Vincent University. Sonia also has a diploma as a Life Skills Training Coach and a certification in Critical Incident Stress Debriefing.
As the spouse of a military member, Sonia understands first-hand many of the unique challenges faced by military families. Postings have allowed her to experience military family life at CFB Moose Jaw, 4 Wing Cold Lake, 8 Wing Trenton, CFB Halifax and presently in Ottawa.
While in Cold Lake, Sonia worked as a counselor for abused women. She then joined the military as a Reserve Force Officer, and worked as Acting Wing Addiction Counselor. During this time, she was also the Director of the Cold Lake Critical Incident Debriefing team.
In 1991, Sonia took on the new challenge of developing and establishing a full-time and comprehensive Life Skills Training Program for military members and their spouses at 4 Wing Cold Lake, a program which still runs today. She ran the program out of the Cold Lake MFRC until moving to 8 Wing Trenton in 1997.
In Trenton, Sonia worked at the MFRC as the francophone Community Counselor for military families and coordinated the francophone Anti-Violence against Women and Children program. In addition, she implemented life skills training programs for military personnel and their spouses for the Base. She also spent one year instructing a French course for military personnel.
Since moving to Ottawa in 2002, Sonia has been actively involved in managing the Ontario Early Years Program in Ottawa South, a Ministry of Children and Youth Services initiative.
Sonia eagerly rejoins the military community in her position as the Senior Manager National Programs and Services. She is thrilled to be joining DMFS and hopes to contribute to the continued enhancement of existing programs and development of new programs to support the ever-changing and unique needs of military families.
