Beyond Excellence: National Conference for MFRC Boards of Directors
Submitted by the Gagetown MFRC
The Gagetown Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC) hosted a national conference for MFRC Boards of Directors from 8-10 May 2009. Over 120 volunteer delegates attended, representing unique military communities from across Canada.
The conference promoted learning and growing together, and was aptly themed Beyond Excellence. Participants had the opportunity to share best practices, network, learn, and work towards the future of the Military Family Services Program (MFSP). Conference sessions included an overview of board Roles and Responsibilities; Risk Management; Financial Sustainability; and Strategic Planning. Navy, Army and Air Force Commanders also held a panel discussion on developing effective relationships with the Canadian Forces (CF) leadership.

The Beyond Excellence conference also provided the opportunity for Board members to meet and reflect on the recommendations for enhancing the MFSP raised at the CF Family Services Summits. The delegates worked with Director Military Family Services (DMFS) to discuss the impact of the recommendations for enhancement on the role of the Board and their governance responsibility.
Conference participants were also invited to be the honoured guests of CFB Gagetown Commander, Colonel Ken Chadder, for a traditional Mess Dinner with special appearances of 3 Field Artillery Band, and 3 Area Support Group Pipes and Drums.
Special guests at the Beyond Excellence conference included the Chief of the Defence Staff, General Walt Natynczyk and his wife, Leslie; Land Forces Atlantic Area Commander, Brigadier-General Dave Neasmith; and Senator Lucie Pépin, a long-time champion of military family support.
The Gagetown MFRC would like to thank all those who volunteered and helped make the conference a success. A sincere thank you to our partners, CFB Gagetown and DMFS, for the ongoing support to military families and communities.
