Trim a tree for a toonie

October 25, 2006

CANEX's annual "Trim Our Tree for a Toonie" campaign kicked off November 15, at CF bases, wings and units across the country.

For the past five years, CANEX has teamed up with the Military Police Fund for Blind Children (MPFBC) over the holiday season to help raise money for Canadian children living with visual impairments. The money is raised by selling paper ornaments to decorate Christmas trees at all CANEX locations in Canada.

So until December 24, CANEX customers can purchase a red, green or gold ornament for two dollars (100 percent of which is donated directly to the MPFBC), sign his or her name on the decoration and hang it on the Christmas tree set up in their respective CANEX outlets.

"The trees are bare now," says John Hare, CANEX Manager at CFB Borden, "but they will be covered by Christmas time; it'll be tough to find a free branch!"

"This campaign is always a testament to the generous nature of Canadian Forces personnel, their families and their entire communities," says Lieutenant-Colonel David Shuster, chair, MPFBC. "Last year alone, the campaign raised $10 000; this means that the pressure's really on this year to surpass that total!"

Over $25 000 has been donated to the MPFBC since the "Trim Our Tree for a Toonie" program was conceived by CANEX employees in the Maritimes in 2002.

The MPFBC was created in 1957 to enhance the quality of life and improve self-confidence of young people living with visual impairments through the provision of equipment, computers, and grants for field trips, summer camps, and more.
