Media Advisory - CF Hosts World Military Volleyball Championship

June 10, 2004

OTTAWA - The Canadian Forces (CF) will host nearly 300 international athletes in Kingston June 11-20 during the 26th World Military Volleyball Championship.

Presented by the Personnel Support Programs (PSP) division of the Canadian Forces Personnel Support Agency (CFPSA), the championship will be the second largest Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) event to be held in Canada.

"Sport plays an important part in the lives of our military personnel and such a high-profile international event is a unique opportunity for our CF athletes," says the CFPSA Director of Physical Education, Gaétan Melançon.

Twelve men's teams and four women's teams will participate in the event, which will be hosted by Canadian Forces Base Kingston (CFB Kingston) and Royal Military College of Canada (RMC). All games will take place at the Kingston Military Community Sports and Fitness Complex on the RMC campus.

"This is a great opportunity for us to showcase Kingston and Canada to the world," says Colonel Larry Aitken, Commander of CFB Kingston. "Our athletic facilities are among the best in the country."

Teams will come from Germany, the Netherlands, China, the United States, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Cameroon, Morocco, Greece, Latvia and Italy. Canada will enter both a men's and a women's team.

"People in both the military and civilian community are very excited about this event," says Mr. Chris Pilon, 2004 CISM Volleyball Coordinator with Kingston PSP. "It's an opportunity to see volleyball at its best."

The CFPSA provides personnel support programs, including national and international sports, and services to CF members and their families. Its mission is to enhance the quality of life of the military community and contribute to the operational readiness and effectiveness of the CF.
