Saint-Jean camp for teens of military families
By Serge Dumaresq, Recreation Coordinator, 5 ASG, Saint-Jean Garrison, 450 358-6777-5522, Dumaresq.JS@forces.gc.ca
A camp for teens of our military families took place from July 4 to August 24, as part of the national youth program. For a minimal charge, youth between the ages of 12 and 17 were able to take part in some interesting and amusing activities.
First week
Claude Poirier, assisted by Annie Cournoyer, shared his extensive knowledge with teens interested in mountain climbing on Mont Saint-Grégoire and in exercises on the rappelling tower at Farnman Garrison. Once there, they had an opportunity to make a river crossing.
Second week
This marvelous adventure was followed by three days of canoe camping, where teens discovered paddling techniques. Fears notwithstanding, they ran into a Henryville wetland, the approaches of Fort Lennox and the shores of the Richelieu River.
Third week
Under the direction of our instructor, Yannick Lebeau, youth received three days of pool and whitewater dive training.
Fourth week
Sgt Dave Querry invited teams to a boot camp at the Farnman Garrison. Activities included an obstacle course, camouflage, orientation, bivouac and night sentry practices, which gave these fearless participants several hours of fun.
Fifth and sixth week
André Dufort and his team staged a sailing camp on the marvelous Pointe Picard site. We then hopped on our bicycles and took a three-day tour that covered 137 kilometres.
Seventh week
The camp wrapped up with a week of rest, which included a pontoon excursion with ski tubes, a day at the Bromont water slides and a walk in the Mont Saint-Hilaire park.
The teen camp was a resounding success. Needless to say, the Saint-Jean recreation team will make plans to stage this event again next year!
