Graphic design tip using PDF:

By DComm designers, CFPSA, Ottawa:Hélène Gareau, 613-992-3140, gareau.helene@cfpsa.com, and Patt Devine, 613-995-9018, devine.patt@cfpsa.com

One of the main reasons for using PDF is that the file you’re creating will look virtually the same to the person you send it to, with less opportunity for miscommunication and distortion. This also means they don’t need to have the same application programs (Excel, PowerPoint, InDesign), fonts, or even the same platform (PC, MAC) you do in order to view the document accurately. The files, as well as being more stable, are usually smaller in size. And usually the file will print the same from most printers.

When creating your PDF file, Primo PDF maker will offer you a few different settings. The final purpose of the document will help you choose the appropriate setting:

Screen: optimized for on screen viewing (smallest file)

Print: for printing on your desk jet printer

Prepress: when a project is being outsourced for digital or offset printing (largest file)

PDF offers many functions such as security settings and sharing comments between users. We encourage you to consult the “help” section to find out how to use them.

Cool tip: PDF can read a document or eBook out loud. Just choose the “view” pull down menu, go to “read out loud” then click on “read this page only” or “read end of document”. Turn on your speakers and enjoy!
