Message From The CEO

Major-General Langton Chief Executive Officer, CFPSA

While I very much enjoy preparing these words for each edition of Apropos, it brings home how quickly time passes. In my last column, I noted that summer was upon us. All of a sudden it seems, summer is over, we’re into November, and before long it will be winter. Ugh! At the same time, the Fall brings with it a return to school for our children, and the resumption of a variety of activities, both at work and at home. An exciting time, indeed!

Speaking of time flying, in September we celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the establishment of the Canadian Forces Personnel Support Agency. Throughout the country and beyond, those of you who were around then shared refreshments and memories with your more recent co-workers and those that you serve on our bases and wings. You’ll see photos of those celebrations in this issue, along with a photograph of the original team taken back in 1996. While some have gone on to other pursuits, or retired for good this time, and some look a little older after ten years, the legacy lives on in our raison d’être and motto – Serving Those Who Serve.

In this issue, I want to continue my discussion of our Strategic Directions – this time, Financial Security. In our personal lives, most of us try to balance the demands of our lives now,

with the desire to live comfortably later in life. In the Non-Public Property world, we try to maintain a similar balance – to provide support for current members of the CF and their families, while ensuring there are enough ongoing funds to support future generations appropriately. Consequently, our objective is to “develop revenue-generating opportunities to provide a level of funding sufficient to recapitalize existing NPP assets and acquire new assets to meet emerging needs.” We do this in a number of ways, but most importantly we do it by providing outstanding service to our consumers, our customers, and our stakeholders, whether they be our authorized patrons, base and wing commanders, or our own employees. We also act as stewards of the resources assigned to us, by careful planning and by maximizing the use of those scarce resources. Finally, we listen to the good ideas that you, the experts in your fields, bring forward, and often they end up helping us meet or exceed our objectives. The “Support Our Troops” campaign is an outstanding example of that.

Some of us here in Ottawa were able to attend the Support Our Troops rally on Parliament Hill September 22. It was absolutely amazing to see and hear thousands of people, most wearing red, cheering every reference to the men and women of the CF, in particular those deployed, and acknowledging the sacrifices of their families. Those of us from CFPSA were there also in appreciation of our deployed personnel, who every day are providing direct and essential support to the members of the CF deployed on operations. Canadians are proud of you all.

This issue of Apropos is full of articles about activities that have happened all over the country, and it covers programs for all ages. From Family Fun Days, to the outstanding Youth Website, to BBQs and awards, you’ll find it all. You’ll also find a number of interesting features on the Human Rights and Harassment Prevention program, the International Day of Disabled Persons, and to get you ready for the Christmas panic, an article about an Online Stress Management Tool. All in all, an edition with something for everyone.

The Christmas season will be over before the next Apropos, so let me take this opportunity to thank you all for your great work throughout 2006 and wish you and yours the best for the holiday season and the year 2007 to come.
