22 Wing Raptorball completes fifth season

By Todd Proulx, Recreation Leader/Programmer, 22 Wing CFB North Bay

The Raptorball Program, presented by Reebok, has just completed its fifth season at CFB North Bay. The program gives youth aged six to 13 an opportunity to learn and enjoy the game of basketball in a safe, low competitive, yet high in fun environment.

This developmental initiative gives participants a chance to maximize their potential and understand the physical capabilities it takes to perform any exercise or sport. Since its inception in 1997, Ontario's overall participation in Raptorball has grown from 450 kids to over 10,000. Currently, there are more than 150 affiliated sites in operation across Ontario. The program continues expanding in size and numbers as it rolls out across Canada.

Each participant receives a minimum of two hours per week of basketball experience - the program runs for 16 weeks in total. In addition, each player receives a reversible Reebok jersey, pair of Raptor basketball shorts, headband, and a coupon to attend a Raptors game in Toronto.

The goals of this program are to teach the fundamentals of basketball (in a progressive and consistent fashion), encourage sportsmanship and fair-play, and above all else, for the participants to have fun and make new friends while enjoying the sport of basketball.

The program is successful here at 22 Wing, because we have an exceptional core of volunteers from within our community. We're blessed to have 75 per cent of our volunteer coaches and assistants come from either the Canadian or American Military Community. Even though we're a small base, our participation is the best, and we can always count on military families to support our programs.
