Message From The CEO

Once again, summer is upon us and thoughts are turning to watching gardens grow, playing golf, boating, sailing, cottaging, and traveling with family and friends. However you spend your holidays this summer, I hope you have (or had, if you're just getting back) a relaxing, refreshing, and safe break.
In the past couple of issues of Apropos, I highlighted our top two Strategic Directions - Education and Communications, and Human Resources Harmonization respectively. In this issue, I want to discuss briefly the third direction - Market Penetration. Quite simply, this means that we want to develop and progress initiatives that will increase service levels to current authorized patrons and to ensure that we maximize the number of those patrons that take advantage of the many and varied services that we offer. To do this, we need to do three things: ensure people know they are eligible patrons; make certain they know that we offer value; and continue to treat them as valued clients and customers. This objective is clearly associated with education and communication - marketing, to use another term; however, one of the best ways to promote market penetration is to offer such great service that people tell their friends, who tell their friends, and so on. I know you're all out there providing that great service to whomever you serve. Keep up the good work.

As usual this issue of Apropos is about people. We welcome the new, say farewell to a few, and celebrate the accomplishments of many. Mary Turner completes her series with an article explaining that in the end, we all work for Her Majesty and numerous federal employment statutes do apply to the staff of NPF, CF. One of these is the Official Languages (OL) Act, and you'll read about CFPSA's OL Action Plan in this issue. All that and the Show Tours, the Youth Conference, and a new CANEX outlet in Halifax. My thanks to all those who have submitted and continue to submit interesting articles and photos about our great team. In closing, let me thank you for your warm hospitality as I have continued to visit our bases and wings across the country and international deployed operations. I was particularly pleased to have been in Kandahar, Afghanistan, coincident with the opening of our Tim Hortons outlet. The preparations for the establishment of the outlet have been the source of a great deal of media interest over the past several months. While double-doubles and ice caps will certainly be appreciated by the troops, we have tried to make the point that deployed CF personnel have benefited from the work of over 350 of our people since Roto 7 in Bosnia in 2001. The Tim Hortons outlet will be an important addition to our deployed ops services, but it is just a part of the outstanding work all of you do every day. Have a great summer!
