Message From The CEO

Major-General Langton Chief Executive Officer, CFPSA

Somehow three months of 2006 have already passed. A very belated Happy New Year to all of you. There is no doubt in my mind that this will be another busy but exciting and interesting year for all of us.

While I appreciate Apropos as an excellent communication tool, what I like best is that it’s about people. In this issue we welcome, and let you meet, the new President of SISIP Financial Services, M. André Bouchard, and the newer Vice-President of Human Resources, Ms. Sharon Fleming. André, of course, is not new to SISIP FS, and certainly hit the ground running in his new position. Sharon comes to CFPSA with a wealth of HR experience and has, for the last month or so, been drinking from the proverbial fire hose.

CFPSA’s second strategic objective: Human Resources Harmonization

Unfortunately, as we celebrate new beginnings, we at the same time mourn the untimely passing of two people whose lives touched many of us: Mr. Marian Bielec, who was PSP Manager in Europe and a colleague who truly lived our motto, Serving Those Who Serve not only in garrison, but also while deployed in Bosnia; and, Lieutenant-General (Ret’d) Christian Couture, former Chief of Staff and then Assistant Deputy Minister (Human Resources -Military), and a strong supporter of CFPSA. They will be missed.

Most of you will now know that the Chief of the Defence Staff has taken steps to revitalize the culture of fitness within the Canadian Forces. I realize that many of you in the fitness world experienced the results of this direction as CF members ensured their testing was up to date. I thank you for your efforts and your patience throughout. On a related note, I commend to those of you who smoke, but wish you didn’t, the article on the “I Quit” challenge. It’s never too late to “butt out”.

Finally, Mary Turner continues to unravel the mystery that is Non-Public Property in the second of her three-part series. In all of this, we focus on the second of our strategic objectives: Human Resources Harmonization. This title is multi-faceted in that we want to continue to provide you, the members of the Staff of Non-Public Funds, Canadian Forces, with a safe and welcoming workplace, the tools (training, IT) you need to do your jobs, and appropriate compensation and benefits. As part of that effort, we are completing a review of CFPSA HR policies to ensure they are coherent, consistent and upto-date. Furthermore, we are exploring ways in which we might share resources with DND to optimize training opportunities and, where possible, to harmonize our approaches to related HR challenges.

Let me wish all of you a healthy, happy and productive 2006. I look forward to meeting many of you where you work and live as I continue my visits to our Wings and Bases across the country.
