“Katelynn’s - Katrina One Week Challenge!”

By JoAnne Gagne

Katelynn Wales

Katelynn Wales, daughter of Sheryl and MCpl Wales, became distraught while watching TV coverage of Hurricane Katrina, which hit the southern United States on August 29. She was moved by the plight of residents in ravaged Louisiana and Mississippi, who lost everything to the devastating winds. She witnessed children clinging to rooftops and wading through polluted water, and told her mother, with tears in her eyes, that she needed to do something for the children. As she sat quietly, she got an idea.

Katelynn delivers the Borden Citizen base newspaper. She decided to donate one week’s earnings to the relief fund, and challenged all children on base to donate one week’s pay or allowance. As of October 21 Katelynn had raised $500 for the Canadian Red Cross, to purchase food, diapers, formula and much more. The focus of Katelynn’s challenge was “Children Helping Children.”

Bill Elson Retires

By Mac McMillan

Mac McMillan, Vice-President CANEX, presenting Bill (retired CANEX RM Atlantic – Halifax) with a $175 gift certificate to “Golf Town” on behalf of all CANEX staff. Mac McMillan, Vice-President CANEX, presenting Bill (retired CANEX RM Atlantic – Halifax) with a $175 gift certificate to “Golf Town” on behalf of all CANEX staff.

At Bill Elson’s request, his retirement function contained no fanfare, and consisted of doing what he loves the most, golfing. Given the amount of Tim Hortons coffee Bill consumed while with CANEX, our partners from Tim Hortons allowed us on the excellent Nova Scotian golf course belonging to Ron Joyce, the co-founder of Tim Hortons. Bill enjoyed his day immensely, and to mark the occasion he enjoyed (we endured) a $25 Cuban cigar on the front and back nines. When Bill was asked what he will miss the most, he simply replied, “the fun, as I don’t regret a day in uniform or a day with CANEX.” The president of CANEX acknowledged Bill’s contributions, emphasizing the respect he had earned from Agency staff and base authorities alike. Bill intends to travel and treat his golf clubs like a MasterCard: He’ll never leave home without them.
