“Wow! Bev sent me free tickets to the Grey Cup,” Jean exclaims, opening the mail. Visions of parades and hoopla appear. “This makes up for the long hours I put in. Now all I need is a business trip to British Columbia. Can I smoke it past the acting boss? Yeah, a liaison visit should do it.”
There sits a happy Jean. Grey Cup tickets. Lucky stiff. Seems like some people have all the connections.
Rationalizing an unscheduled trip is not too difficult for Jean. The job already involves periodic travel and there probably is some merit in face-to-face liaison between Jean and a counterpart in B.C. But such a visit is not in Jean’s business plan. Fact is they met just last month.
Not a problem, Jean contends. “It’s only fair. I have put in my time and, unlike everyone else, I don’t get many perks. Heck, I earned these tickets smoothing the way for Bev to get that lucrative personal services contract.”
Luck, business connections, networking. There are many ways one may come by a reward. When one receives a benefit having more than a nominal value and it is a product of one’s work-related responsibilities as an NPF employee, certain dynamics come into play, namely the NPF Ethics Policy, and one’s personal ethics.
Jean, fortunately, had signed the “Ethics Statement” at PRAR time. Now, upon reflection and a sobering re-read of that statement, Jean knew what had to be done... It was the right thing to do.
To learn about the Employee Ethics Statement, and what guided Jean’s decision, please view the up-dated Ethics Policy at: www.cfpsa.com/en/corporate/resources/Library/Manuals/HRPolicy/HRPolicy.pdf It’s the right thing to do.
