Getting A Kick Out Of Tae Kwon Do

Peter Nicols

Peter Nicol, PSP employee at RMC, gets a kick out of tae kwon do. As the Head Tae Kwon Do coach at Royal Military College (RMC) and one of the assistant coaches of the CF Tae Kwon Do Team, the majority of his spare time is dedicated to the sport.

This summer, he proudly escorted the Canadian University Tae Kwon Do Team as they packed up their dobok’s and headed for Turkey, to compete in the 23rd Universiade FISU competition.

Eight men and eight women represented Canada at the Izmir, Turkey games, including RMC student Second-Lieutenant John Kim, also a member of the CISM Tae Kwon Do Team.

The summer Universiade is a multi-sport competition, open to post-secondary students, that takes place once every two years. It is the second largest international sporting event, next to the Olympic games. This past summer’s event included 14 sports and had approximately 9000 athletes from over 130 countries. For the tae kwon do portion, there were over 450 athletes from 60 countries participating.

Peter, attending the games in the role of the women’s coach, was one of three coaches selected to go. He began coaching tae kwon do at RMC in 1997, and has coached at the provincial, national, CISM and FISU levels. Peter is a graduate of CMR Saint-Jean (class of ‘90) and a former member of the CF Tae Kwon Do Team. Currently he holds a 4th Dan Black Belt and has been practicing tae kwon do since 1982. As an athlete, Peter participated in three World CISM Tae Kwon Do Championships (Korea ‘91, Iran ‘92, Canada ‘93).

The journey to the Universiade is an honour for Peter. Congratulations to him on a truly rewarding experience.
