A Dream Becomes Reality...

Mud splatters all over Michelle Cormiers legs. Her sneakers are coated in dirt, but she doesnt mind. Michelle is doing what she loves. She is training on the rugged trails of CFB Borden.
Michelle works with the directing staff at the CFPSA Training Centre. She is part of a team who instructs and develops physical fitness, fitness evaluations, sports and recreation courses for PSP staff and CF members.
Michelle has been running for 25 years, and doesnt plan to stop anytime soon. The majority of those years have been spent racing on track and road courses, however this year her focus has turned to mountain running.
I have always loved running hills, explains Michelle. Ive raced in mountain type events before, including a few in Croatia while I was deployed with CFPSA.
A few years ago, Michelle heard about a mountain running competition called the World Mountain Championship. It became her dream to represent Canada in this event.
She began training consistently on the Borden CISM trail, and scheduled weekend runs on local mountains, and in Provincial Parks.
The Borden area has many trails for running, and lots of trail races, says Michelle. Its very tough, but I love the intensity!
This year, Michelles dream will become a reality. She is one of three Canadian women who have been selected to represent Canada in the World Mountain Championships this fall in Wellington, New Zealand.
The womens team will consist of three runners, the mens team will have seven, says Michelle. I am the only runner from Ontario, there is one from Montréal, and all the others are from provinces out west, where mountain running is a very popular sport.
The New Zealand terrain is similar to that of the Borden area trails, but the elevation will be much greater. As the big race day approaches, Michelle continues to train on those trails with all her heart. I could not have come this far without the support from my training mate, friend, and sponsor, New Balance, she declares. Its very encouraging to know there are so many people cheering for my success!
Best of luck in New Zealand Michelle, go out there and fulfill your dream!
