Helping those in need

By Lee Howard

"At the end of March, I'd already finished eight," says Luc Champagne, a National Helpdesk Support Specialist at CFPSA. "People are finding out about my service, and I'm more than happy to help them."

It was 13 years ago when Luc gave his first refurbished computer to a family in need. "I was volunteering with the homeless shelter, Sheppard's of Good Hope, when a lady mentioned to me that they receive lots of donations aside from just food," says Luc. "So I decided I'd fix an old computer I had, and donate it."

That was just the start. Since 1992, Luc has devoted his time and his expertise to helping families who are less fortunate. "Christmas is my busiest time of the year," notes Luc. "Most of the computers I work on, I donate to Buckingham Community Centre."

Although Luc spends a great deal of his personal time working on computers, he never meets the families he helps. "A contact at the community center gives me orders," says Luc. "I never meet the people I'm helping, but I've received letters from families saying how much they appreciate what I've done, it makes me feel good."

"Each computer takes about five hours and 150 dollars to complete depending on the shape it's in and the parts I need, but it is worth it to help those who need it."

If you've got an old computer taking up space in or collecting dust, why don't you give Luc a call to see if he can put it to good use.
