Canadian Military Youth to Receive Enhanced Programs

After five years of community consultations, youth needs assessments, and the development of program enhancement strategies, the Canadian Military Community Youth Program received a financial boost in October 2004.
The $2.3 million, to be allocated over the next three years, was approved by the Non-Public Property Board of Directors for the implementation of enhanced national and local youth programs and services.
Six years ago, the Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs identified CF youth as a population requiring more attention in the development and delivery of programs and services.
In 1998, little was being done within the CF community to support youth.
We recognize that youth from CF families are in a more vulnerable position than the average Canadian youth, says Randy Helgason, Director Personnel Support Programs Resources. CF youth face the same challenges and obstacles as other youth, plus the added stress of frequent parental deployments and family relocations.
In 2002, the CFPSA released the Canadian Forces National Youth Model to address the unique needs of youth from CF families. The National Youth Model is a framework on which collaborative planning will ensure that youth from CF families have unrestricted access to quality, responsive, and meaningful programs and services wherever they live.
This injection of money into the Canadian Military Community Youth Program will help us implement significant enhancements to national and local youth services, says Celine Thompson, Director of Military Family Services.
Initially, the funds will help support the establishment of youth advisory committees.
The advisory committees, which will be composed primarily of youth from CF families, will determine the needs of its community then apply for funds to support initiatives that will address the identified need, says Alla Ivask, Senior Manager of Policy and Program Development, Directorate of Military Family Services.
The funds, which will be available to all CF locations with PSP and/or MFRC representation, may be used to support youth programs, services, resources, facilities, partnerships, and employment/volunteerism strategies.
