Working together - count me in Diversity and Equity update

Between 1996 and 2001, Canada's population increased by four per cent (1.16 million people), one of the smallest census-to-census growth rates. During this period, immigration accounted for more than 50 percent of Canada's population growth, with more than half of immigrants settling in Ontario. It is estimated that by 2010, more than half the population of major urban centres will be firstgeneration immigrants, and by 2016, two-thirds of the Canadian labour force will be made up of employment equity designated groups (women, aboriginals, people with disabilities and visible minorities).
It is the intent of the CFPSA/NPF to provide a transparent and equitable merit and competency based employment system, and to facilitate a barrier-free, inclusive and supportive work environment for all qualified workers. To this end, a multi-year Employment Equity Plan (EEP) has been drafted with specific strategies and a timetable for changes necessary to ensure that the NPF workforce becomes more representative of the Canadian mosaic. Integral to the EEP, and fundamental to its success is an extensive Employment Equity and Diversity training and awareness program that will be introduced in the new year.
