Giving back to your community

Getting involved in community events is a rewarding experience both personally and professionally. This year I sat on the organizing committee for the London "Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion" event. Over 30 military personnel were involved in fundraising and the event itself, playing wheelchair basketball, and organizing a car wash and BBQ. The Commanding Officer, Maj Keith MacNeil, competed in a wheelchair with local celebrities. PSP led the group warm-up for the 300 participants and children toured some military vehicles. It was a chance to build morale and give the community a look behind the walls of ASU London.
Working on the committee led to networking opportunities, and contacts with community members that will help me in my role as PSP Coordinator. On a personal level I gained patience (not one of my strengths), by wearing two hats and acting as team captain.

I now have a new outlook on life and an increased awareness of the challenges people with spinal cord injuries have to face. Giving back to your community is a WIN-WIN situation for everyone involved.
London held the second largest event nationally, and contributed over $30,000 to the national total of $1.2 million.
