A Healthy and Safe Workplace is Important

By Brigitte Smiley

As a responsible employer, NPF complies with Canada Labour Code, Part II - Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and recognizes the concept of due diligence and its obligations in providing for a healthy and safe work environment for employees, contractors and customers.

Even though the existing NPF Occupational Health and Safety policy met all of the basic requirements, CFPSA is revising it to account for the revisions made in 2000 to the Canada Labour Code and our diverse work environments. “This revised policy is more comprehensive and tailored to our NPF working environment” said Léon Noël, Occupational Health and Safety Manager, during his presentation at the national conferences. “We have unionized and non-unionized employees, different types of activities, different reporting relationships and various customers,” he added. Leon has been mandated by CFPSA’s President and CEO to revise the NPF Occupational Health and Safety policy under the NPF HR Policy Section 13. This policy, necessary to prevent or reduce the incidence of occupational injuries, illnesses and accidents, will be applied by the operational managers of CANEX, SISIP FS, PSP, Finance and HR on bases, wings and units. Local HR Managers, through Regional Managers HR, will be responsible for monitoring the application of this policy by advising and following-up through the NPF chain of command.

The revised policy, which includes easy to understand forms and instructions, will be promulgated progressively starting in July 2004.
