The idea struck during an Op DANACA/Op CALUMET Show Tour I attended as an escort officer in December 2003.
MFRCs are well-connected to CF families, and both are concerned with boosting morale for those serving in theatre or in isolated environments. The CF Show Tours have the same operational goal--lifting the spirits of the troops.
I saw the benefit of bringing these three groups together on a creative project designed to boost the morale of those serving in Afghanistan.
A simple plan evolved for the creation of homemade cards to be sent to the troops in Afghanistan. MFRC in Valcartier organized the activity, and the military families supplied the love and enthusiasm. The cards will be hand delivered by the performers during show tour performances and activities.
The cards were hand-delivered at the beginning of each show by the performers of the Op ATHENA Show Tour. |
In total, 113 cards were created and delivered to Ottawa for sorting and shipping to Afghanistan. Once there, the Deployed Ops staff will ensure delivery to the appropriate camps.
Special thanks to the CF Show Tour, Deployed Ops, the Valcartier MFRC, the CFPSA communications team, and especially the family members who created the cards for making this project possible.
