Lookout for the Award

Winning an award is a nice validation of your work: it reaffirms that what you do has some relevance and that others think this too. This year, the Lookout newspaper, CFB Esquimalt's weekly publication, won the 2003 Pacific Railway Better Newspapers Competition - Best CFB paper.

"Lookout displays brilliant front-page colour with an attractive and clean layout. It's very eye appealing," judges said. They praised Lookout for its editorial content, advertising, and photography, which combine to make, "an attractive package."

Every week after the send button is pressed and the electronic PDF file of the newspaper is sent to the press, feedback on the entire package is lean; to compete for and win a newspaper award is an awesome form of feedback.

The staff at Lookout has worked hard to create a product that could compete with any community newspaper outside of the DND. The stories are both entertaining and educational, and when the occasion arises, the stories tackle controversial topics with diligence.

"While awards are a nice pat on the back, it's the response from our readers that really counts," says Melissa Atkinson, Editor. "If we've kept them informed, raised their knowledge level, or brought a smile about, then we have truly succeeded."
