A critical indicator of personal and job satisfaction is a sense of control. We need to feel that we have choice and power in our daily lives.
One of the easiest ways to gain a sense of control is to take a good look at your environment. Consider the people with whom you associate, how you spend your leisure time, and your daily physical environment. Our surroundings can have a direct impact on our mood, thoughts and creativity.
Over the coming weeks, take some steps to improve your home and work environments. These simple choices will have a direct impact on how you think, feel and act.
-
It is hard to feel serene when you are surrounded by clutter. Clean out some closets and give away items you no longer need. If you haven't used something in the past year, chances are someone else needs it more than you.
-
Make your workspace more colourful and inspiring by adding a personal touch with photos, art, reminders of what is important to you. Even better, bring something to work that adds pleasure to everyone's environment.
-
Fill your leisure time with sounds and images that are uplifting. Music, the conversation of family and friends, and even silence, will provide a greater sense of relaxation than mindless and violent television programming. Do not go to bed with images of the late-night newscast dancing in your head.
Choose how you spend your time and company at work. Contribute to a more positive and enjoyable workplace by eliminating the pollution of negativity and cynicism.
