Cheryl Rothenburg, Health Promotion Director at 8 Wing/CFB Trenton teamed up with Don Heans, the Wing General Safety Officer and Acklands Granger, a safety supply company, to host a Health and Safety Tradeshow. The event was a great success with an estimated 500 attendees visiting the 46 health and safety booths.


Mac McMillan, CANEX Prairie RM presents Leila Philips, Executive Director for Suffield Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC) and Karl Norhaugen, PSP Manager with a C-XTra certificate of $777.00 representing over 770,000 points donated by CANEX patrons for the MFRC Food Bank.



Cathia Huot, Health Promotion Director in Saint-Jean Garrison, organized a Health Day at the Mont Saint-Bruno shooting range, where young and old had the opportunity to take control of their health. More than 700 people came out on this beautiful day topped with numerous prizes and dazzling smiles. The crowd was able to get information on various health topics at the many stands set up on the premises. Also, participants could take part in outdoor activities, get a chair massage, play paintball, try their hand at archery or learn about different clubs like the Medieval Club or PSP activities. They could also take a break and enjoy juice and snacks courtesy of Loblaw's. On Saturday August 2nd 2003, the CANEX Mall at CFB Petawawa, along with several community minded businesses, hosted a "Salute the Troops" family fun day. The family fun day was developed to brighten those little faces whose mothers or fathers have left for Op ATHENA in Afghanistan.



A Certificate of Appreciation from the National Executive and Regional Representatives of the Military Police Fund for Blind Children was presented to 3 ASG Gagetown CANEX Management and Staff for their outstanding contribution and support. Remember the Blackout?
The CANEX store at CFB Borden opened at 8:00 on Friday August 15 in spite of the fact that they had no electricity for the first three hours. Armed with calculators and recording all items sold the old manual way, they made many customers happy. “I have the most amazing staff a manager could ask for”, says Donna Windley, ExpressMarts Manager, “they came together and gave amazing customer service in the hardest of conditions.”


During the summer months, CANEX offered a free shuttle service to the 2000 militias based at Camp Vimy in Valcartier so that they can visit and shop at our facilities.





A “Get up and Get Moving Pedometer Challenge” was the focus for Strengthening the Forces (StF) at CFB Petawawa in August and September. Participants were asked to gather a team of five to compete against other teams signed up during the same week. For three days competitors wore pedometers and recorded their daily steps. At the end of the week, steps were added, averaged and a weekly winner was determined. Participants included CF members, their families, and Defence team employees. Team “Sizzlers” won the first week with an individual daily average of 14,686 steps! Team members, Meegan Turcotte, Jennifer Conway, Matt Pardy and Jen Hallam receive their trophy from StF Director, Dana Lawson. Team member missing from the picture is Robyn Quade.


The Esquimalt Military Family Resource Centre has exciting ideas to raise money!

The Naval Mess Dinner is a black tie event not to be missed! In November, participants will have a chance to savour a seven course meal and learn about the naval lifestyle. Lieutenant Governor of BC, the Honourable Iona Campagnolo, will be in attendance.

The MFRC has partnered with the Naden Band to produce the CD “Sailing to the Sounds of the Naden Band.” A Christmas CD will be available soon too!

Robin Jones’ retirement

While visiting the Maritimes in May, Mr. Jean-Marie Perusse – CANEX President and Mr. Bill Elson – RM Atlantic CANEX took Robin Jones out for his official retirement dinner. Robin retired from CANEX as Food Services Manager with almost 28 years of dedicated service. During his career, Robin was one of only two to join the “Millionaire’s Club” and receive an award for his stores contributing in excess of one million dollars to the Base/Wing Fund. – From left to right – Bill Elson, Robin Jones, Jean-Marie Perusse, and Joan Jones (Robin’s wife).


Maxine Miles’ retirement

The Halifax A Block CANEX group got together in celebration of Maxine Miles’ retirement. Mr. Bill Elson, CANEX RM Atlantic was on hand to present Maxine with a Certificate of Service for her 17 dedicated years at CANEX.
