A light hearted monthly print publication delivered to cafeterias, messes, libraries, reception and/or waiting areas at each Base/Wing (B/W) in Canada. It is targeting primarily CF members at all ranks, and secondarily the Morale and Welfare development and delivery team members. The publication features national Non-Public Funds educational content with areas on the page dedicated to local content that may be used for announcements or advertising. The publication is produced as a single page, double sided with English on one side and French on the reverse.
A pilot project began in September 2009 at 4 bases. Phase 2 began February 2010, Phase 3 is ongoing and will gradually ramp up until the publication is distributed nationally.
Can it be posted to the web instead of printed?
The Community Gateway web site will be the official and only communications portal for local Base/Wing activities, programs and services. Stand Easy merely offers an additional avenue for distributing information. Stand Easy’s content can be re-broadcast on the local Community Gateway portal but a printed Stand Easy complements rather than replaces on-line communications.
Is the publication a little too “light weight”?
The content is meant to be playful, light and comic. It is intended to be digested very quickly in off-duty, informal environments. It’s casual, loose and informational, using positive messaging focused on morale and welfare topics. Its educational components are soft and subtle and are targeting “average” members of the Canadian Forces.
Each month, the designated local person will receive a version of Stand Easy that can be adapted for local publication. Each Base/Wing is responsible for inserting local content, printing and distribution.
The Base/Wing with CF Newspapers or similar existing infrastructure may choose to print Stand Easy using existing print supplier contacts. For the remaining Bases/Wings, the newsletter may be printed or photocopied in-house using internal resources or sent out to a local print shop.
The publication is formatted to use readily available 11’x17’ or 8.5’x14’ (legal) paper, one page with flip to bilingual. It can be folded in two/three for distribution or display.
How many copies need to be printed?
Each Base/Wing will print and distribute different quantities based on available distribution sites and local population. This can be determined based on the number of members at each Base/Wing and by estimating the traffic flow of each distribution point.
How is Stand Easy distributed?
When a CF Newspaper is available, Stand Easy can be produced as a monthly insert. It can also be made available as tray liners in cafeterias and messes or as a stacked pick-up item in library, reception, gym, NPF offices, and/or waiting areas throughout CF facilities.
Stand Easy is delivered to your designate electronically. The document can then be easily updated with local content.
The national content is locked in the background and the 4 areas dedicated to local content is editable. The use of “Times New Roman” font, size 11pt is recommended.
What type of local content can be included?
At the discretion of the Base/Wing, content can feature local news, announcements, calendar of events, information about NPF operations, local programs or advertising. Stand Easy merely offers you an additional avenue for communicating local messages. Each Base/Wing may to choose to publish as much or as little local content as deemed appropriate and necessary.
Does local content need to be translated into the other language?
The Officials Languages Act of Canada makes the bilingual delivery of information in each language mandatory. The CFPFSS HQ Communications group is responsible for the translation of any national content. All local content with the exception of advertising must be available in both English and French. Each B/W has access to local translation services. These are to be used. Given that any local content that could be published on Stand Easy consists of messaging that local programs and services are already tasked to deliver, the costs associated with the translation of local messaging is therefore already being covered by local budgets.
Can local advertising be included instead of local content?
Absolutely! Revenue generated from the sale of local advertising can offset local costs and even positively contribute to local revenue. Advertising rates are determined locally as is deemed appropriate. The standard advertising size is 3.5 inches wide x 3 inches high.
