Over 200 military swimmers meet at the 43rd World Military Swimming and Lifesaving Championship

By Ryan Cane, National Recreation Manager (Ottawa)

Over 200 military swimmers from 18 nations, including 12 Canadian Forces (CF) members, made waves in Montreal from August 5 to 14 as part of the 43rd World Military Swimming and Lifesaving Championship.

This large international competition was organized the CISM sports cell at DGPFSS headquarters in Ottawa, and supported by 30 PSP staff from Bases and Wings across Canada who came together to help support. This event was also special as it was the first time over 40 military members were tasked to participate behind the scenes working with civilians to create a truly memorable event. “The athletes may never know the long staff hours, the quick changes and the little bumps along the way,” says Johanne Thibault, Director of Sports, Recreation and Messes.  “But their gratitude is evident in their smiles, high fives and excitement to participate. Thank you to all those who helped create friendship through sport and a very successful CISM experience.”
