Taekwondo camp a success

by Maj F. Mercier

CFB Valcartier’s personnel support programs staff organized and hosted a CF taekwondo development camp September 24 to 27.

It was a tremendous opportunity for all participants to improve their technical skills in the sport of World Taekwondo Federation Olympic Taekwondo and to meet other CF enthusiasts to continue advancing taekwondo within the CF.

The development camp offered a review of taekwondo basics followed by instruction in more advanced techniques, forms, self-defence, high-performance combat and some armed and unarmed combat techniques against armed opponents. To finish off, Major (Ret) Karen Armour gave an introduction to the rules and regulations of World Taekwondo Federation Olympic style during a day-long refereeing clinic. The experience proved a humbling one for most, as it became obvious that the task of refereeing or judging taekwondo combat is no task for a rookie and is of utmost importance for the sport.

Although the roots of taekwondo are ancient, the martial art has recently and rapidly gained in popularity around the world, as evidenced by its relatively recent admission to the Olympic Games. The sport has been successfully introduced into the culture of many military organizations, and some have even produced world-class athletes that compete at the international level in events including the Olympic Games.

The CF has just recently approved the practice of taekwondo as sport within its national sports program, a great step toward building the sport within the CF.
