Operation Santa Claus exceeds all expectations raising over $90,000 for Canadian Forces overseas

Fifteen Sobeys stores and their surrounding communities have gotten into the Christmas spirit a little early this year - all to support Canadian troops stationed overseas.

For the third year in a row, several Sobeys stores banded together in support of Operation Santa Claus, raising an astounding $43,725 with an additional $46,000 through donations in the form of product from vendors such as Coca-Cola, Dare Foods, Kraft Canada, Frito Lay and Schneider’s.They also collected 60 “Support Our Troops” banners – equivalent to 2,300 ft – signed by customers and employees. The money contributed to the creation of 4,000 care packages, one for each Canadian soldier overseas. Each care package will include the following Sobeys items for the troops:

•        One case of Compliments 12 pack pop
•        One case of Compliments 12 pack water
•        One unit of Compliments shaving cream
•        One unit of Compliments Deodorant
•        One box of Compliments granola bars
•        One Compliments Bag For Life
•        One 6 pack of Coca-Cola mini cans
•        One Coca-Cola Vancouver 2010 Olympic pin
•        One Box of Simple Pleasure bars
•        Crystal Light drink mix
•        Hot Rods snack
•        Spitz sunflower seeds snack

“The support shown over the past two years from the local communities and other corporations has simply been overwhelming, and it most certainly has grown leaps and bounds since I started working with Operation Santa Claus,” said Matthew Derouin, Store Manager of Molson Park Sobeys. “I am proud to announce that our donation this year is the largest donation the military has ever seen for this program.”

To raise money, each participating Sobeys store asked customers to purchase a “Support Our Troops” ribbon for $2 at the checkout. Customers also had the opportunity to sign one of 60 Support Our Troops Banner, sending messages of well wishes and personal notes to the troops.
