Mission accomplished at the Valcartier Garrison!

The military community in Valcartier rises to the Health Promotion team's challenge and walks the 12,850,412 steps separating Quebec from Kandahar.

The Valcartier Health Promotion (HP) team challenged the Valcartier Garrison community to "Walk to Afghanistan", an activity which took place during the whole month of May as part of the new physical fitness strategy. Those interested in participating had to drop by the HP office to pick up their pedometer, get their picture taken and then... start walking! The goal was to accumulate 12,850,412 steps in 31 days; that's the equivalent of the 10,280 km separating Quebec from Kandahar. The mission was accomplished with resounding success. As a group, the 1,048 people who registered for the challenge walked a total of 134,497,973 steps, which equates to a little more than 5 return trips from Quebec to Afghanistan.

The goal of the "Walk to Afghanistan" challenge was to get people moving with a simple activity such a walking. Studies recommend walking 10,000 steps per day to maintain good health. During the activity, many people realized that they were not walking enough due to their increasingly sedentary lifestyle. The pedometer therefore served as a motivational tool encouraging them to walk more while supporting the troops deployed in Afghanistan.

To finish this activity with a bang, the HP team had a large banner made with photos of all the participants who had chosen to get photographed. The banner was sent to the troops in Afghanistan as a reminder that, despite the 12,850,412 steps that separate us, we're thinking of them and support them in their quest for a better world.

Thanks to all the walkers for making this challenge a huge success!
