March 1st I Quit!
Quitting is a big decision. Success depends on motivation as well as having personalized strategies for dealing with difficult situations. Many people experience withdrawal symptoms the first day after stopping tobacco use. They may include cravings, irritability, insomnia, dizziness, sweating, headaches, and much more. Symptoms begin to lessen after three to four days, and after 10 days, most symptoms should be gone.
A few helpful tips include:
- Finding a buddy by encouraging family and friends to quit at the same time.
- Drinking plenty of water to help the body eliminate nicotine and other toxins more quickly.
- Avoiding places, activities, or events that can be associated with tobacco use.
- Learning various relaxation techniques such as listening to music, deep breathing, taking a long bath.
- Keeping busy by scribbling on a piece of paper, playing with a rubber band or drinking water.
Health Promotion teams on every base/wing will provide support for tobacco users who decide to take this important step by organizing regular activities and providing information kits to everyone who registers. To find the best way to quit, talk with a physician or pharmacist. The most effective approach involves following-up with a physician for the first month. Use of tobacco cessation medication should be supported by a tobacco cessation program.
