Free to Be: The Leafs Song
Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) teamed up with 5-time Juno award winner, Alan Frew of Glass Tiger, to honour the men and women who serve Canada at the Leafs' annual CF Appreciation Night on Saturday, January 30.
It was a special evening, as Frew wowed the crowd with a live rendition of Free to Be: the Leafs Song. All fans in attendance received a collector song sheet so they could sing along.
"It was very patriotic," says Ryan Cane, National Recreation Manager. "You could tell the crowd was moved and the military members were touched." The concept for the song was developed last March when Frew and Tom Anselmi, MLSE's executive vice-president and chief operating officer went to Afghanistan. They were inspired by their visit with Canada's troops.
As part of an effort to support Canada's Troops, the song "Free to Be" was available for download on iTunes with proceeds from the first 72 hours benefiting the Military Families Fund. The Military Families Fund was created to assist military families faced with unforeseen and often immediate needs that have resulted due to conditions of service. The fund continues to grow through the generous contributions of Canadians, corporations and other organizations, providing an additional vehicle to support Canadian Forces members and their families.
