The beginning of a new year gives us an opportunity to reflect on our accomplishments during the last twelve months. Clearly, members of the Defence Team in the field and in headquarters have worked diligently to deliver morale and welfare programs that contribute to the operational effectiveness of the Canadian Forces and to the high retention rate within the CF.

The wait was worthwhile. On November 17th, customers lined up for the official opening of the brand new CANEX SuperMart at 19 Wing Comox. A similar event took place two weeks earlier at CFB Gagetown with the unveiling of a completely renovated SuperMart and addition of a Tim Horton’s outlet.

This January 2011, Don Ferguson, who retired as a Logistics Colonel in 1996, will start a new chapter in the Defence Community as an active proponent for the Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Program for Former Members and Families.

In sports, athletes who achieve distinction on the international stage while showing ability and strength of character deserve national recognition. In the Canadian Forces, things are not different. The CF’s largest and most prestigious recognition event for sports took place on November 6, 2010.

On October 30th 2010, General (ret’d) Rick Hillier’s second book “Leadership” was released and the book signings at 8 Canadian Forces locations across the country have been a tremendous success.

The Director of Fitness (DFIT) Human Performance Research Team leads a diverse range of studies with the purpose of developing relevant and scientifically valid physical fitness standards and programs for a physically capable and efficient military force.

Most everyone has heard the saying ‘your life can change in an instant.’ Unless you have experienced such an instant, it is hard to appreciate the saying. For Corporal Dominic Larocque, a member of the famous Van Doos, that instant occurred on 27 November 2007 when his light-armoured vehicle drove over an improvised explosive device on a stretch of road west of Kandahar City.

The 42nd DND Photography Contest wrapped up November 18th at the Director General Personnel and Family Support Services Headquarters in Ottawa with an awards reception.

This summer a new BMO Bank of Montreal Instabank machine was installed at the CANEX mall and on 28 October, the Canadian Defence Community Banking (CDCB) program hosted an official ribbon cutting ceremony to highlight the benefits of the CDCB program.
