CANEX national projects
The CANEX National Infrastructure Program consists of building new CANEX and concession facilities and the renewal of existing outlets based on a 5, 10 and 20 year replacement/renewal assessment. The overarching intent is to ensure all facilities meet the needs of their local military community and provide the required services to the Defence Team.
Currently the following projects are underway or recently completed:
Comox: A new Retail and Services Mall is currently being constructed at CFB Comox. In order to minimize service interruptions, the existing mall is open to patrons during construction. Concessions will begin to move to the new location in early 2010 and the facility is expected to be open for business in Spring 2010.
CFB Edmonton: A recently renovated ExpressMart, with a renewed design reflecting the highest industry standards, is now open for business. The Canada Post Office has conveniently been located within the outlet.
CFB Winnipeg: A new Retail and Services Mall is currently in the design stage with anticipated construction to begin in the Summer of 2010. Additionally, the Air Force Command Building has received a freshly renovated cafeteria including an updated menu offering.
CFB Petawawa: Plans are currently underway to develop a modern new mall which will include a Grocery Outlet, Retail Outlet and several concessions. A Gasoline Bar/Kiosk and a secure Storage rental facility will be added to complete the service offering.
CFB Borden: The grand opening of the first free-standing Pizza Pizza Restaurant for CANEX took place recently. The restaurant officially opened on August 12th and provides both eat-in and take-out options. The offering goes beyond simply Pizza to include chicken wings and healthy choices such as salads.
CFSU Ottawa: An exciting development for the National Capital Region will be the new CANEX Retail Store, located at 4210 Labelle Street, which is currently under construction. The opening is tentatively slated for early 2010.
CFB Bagotville: To compliment the existing Food Services, a new Café Summum opened at the end of August 2009. An upscale, urbane coffee shop located beside the Subway offers fine coffee, delicious treats and occasionally live entertainment.
The ExpressMart located at CFB Bagotville is also scheduled for a new interior renovation, with an enhanced layout and modern feel. Construction begins in Winter 2009 with the opening scheduled in Spring 2010.
CFB Gagetown: CANEX is in the process of adding 4,000 square feet to the Retail Store Warehouse. The extra warehouse space will allow for better stock-maintenance levels, giving patrons more immediate access to products. A Tim Horton’s kiosk, with a full offering and seating for twenty five, will be constructed concurrently with warehouse.
CFB Halifax: The facelift to the three cafés located in the Halifax Dockyard is almost completed, providing a fresh look to the interiors and improved eating areas.
Nationally: The national Digital Signage Program, which provides information on NPP Programs, CANEX products and services and current Morale & Welfare activities, is now in 90% of our locations. This program provides bilingual messaging videos displayed on a flat screen TV at all CANEX check-out counters.
CANEX will continue to evaluate programs and enhance services to ensure that we meet the needs of the Military community at large. Please visit our web site at www.CANEX.ca to ask questions regarding our infrastructure initiatives or provide your feedback.
