Canada scores a hole in one in the world of the military golf
Dust. That is what the average person would think of when mentioning African terrain. Likely, the furthest thing from anyone’s mind would be a golf course. Canada’s CISM Golf team knows the difference though; they have just returned from the 6th Military World Golf Championship hosted by Windhoek, Namibia from 14-21 November 2009, and they returned with hardware.
The World Military Golf Championship is a 72 hole tournament that occurs on an annual basis. Each year the tournament boasts 10-16 countries vying for top honours. The tournament recognizes both Men’s and Women’s team categories, Men’s and Women’s open individual categories, and Men’s Senior (over 40) categories.
Canada has always been a strong contender in the world of CISM Golf, and this year was no different. After two days Canada’s Men’s team were tied for third with Pakistan, who were out for revenge after Canada beat them on their home course in their last meeting in 2006. A strong third day of competition catapulted the Canadians past the Pakistani by five strokes. The Men’s team was comprised this year of Sgt Tom Cameron, Gagetown; CWO Tony Stuckless, Shearwater; Capt Cameron Lowdon, Cornwall; Capt David Holsworth, Ottawa; Capt Wayne O’Donnell, Colorado; and PO1 Gilles Leblanc, Esquimalt. Jason Price, PSP Shearwater was the team manager, and Tom Campbell, PSP Esquimalt was a member of the Sport Technical Committee.
Canada’s Women’s team were also in the medals after the third day of competition, sitting just behind the Danes for third place. Sgt Lisa Rowe, Trenton; and MCpl Denise Gaudet, Cold Lake made up the two person female team that were taking on the largest women’s contingent that the tournament has seen to date.
On the final day of competition, both the Men’s team and the Women’s team carried through with their steady performance earning Bronze and Silver medals respectively. Capt Lowdon and CWO Stuckless each medalled in the individual senior category with a Silver and Bronze respectively.
“Of particular note, our team took home the most important trophy of all” says Price, Team Manager. “We were awarded the Fairplay Trophy which is voted on by all of the participating countries in the tournament. We were told it was a landslide vote. Anytime your peers vote you as the best overall, it is a testament to the respect that was earned.”
The Fairplay Trophy is awarded to the team that best exemplifies Sportsmanship, Camaraderie, and Performance both on and off the golf course. It is a true representation of the CISM motto “Friendship through Sport”.
“I guess using golf terms we got a hole in one when judging our success at this tournament. I am truly proud of our team for the way they represented our military and above all, our country.”
