Wednesday, May 27th, 2009 marked the first ever exhibition of rugby on Canada's most famous lawn, Parliament Hill. The Ottawa Irish Rugby Club and a team made up of CF members and featuring the Minister of National Defence, the Honourable Peter MacKay, faced each other during an exhibition match, with the proceeds going to the Military Families Fund (MFF). The rain did not stop the fans that came in large numbers to support and encourage both teams. The action packed match ended by a 6-5 (30-25) victory for the Ottawa Irish Club. Thanks to the collaboration of everybody involved, the event raised more than $25,000 for the Military Families Fund. Earlier this spring, a DND team led by CDS, General Natynczyk took part in a similar initiative by playing a hockey game against the Ottawa Foreign Military Attachés team. The event, which ended with a final score of 9-6 for DND, raised $18,000 for the Military Families Fund. The MFF’s next major event is the SOT Gala that will be hosted by Gen Walt Natynczyk next September, in Edmonton. In addition to the MFF, Operation Santa Claus, the Hospital Comfort Fund, the CF Personnel Assistance Fund, and Soldier On will also benefit from the proceeds raised at the Gala. |
