Music holds an important place in Canadian military heritage, and for the past few years, the Royal 22e Régiment Band was looking for a way to support the troops when they deployed. This led to the idea of forming a choir composed of families and friends of military members. People’s response to the idea was quick and enthusiastic. In early June, when the recruitment drive was still under way, more than 50 choristers, including 15 men, had already joined. The result? A choir of people from various walks of life, ranging in age from 7 to 77 and comprising mothers, veterans, experienced choristers and even people who have never sung before. The first rehearsal of the Choeur des familles took place in late May, and after only a few weeks of practice, they were ready for their first performance on June 30 at the Citadel in Quebec City. "I'm impressed. The harmony between the voices is excellent," said the conductor, Sergeant Julie Archambault. "The singers have so much energy. They work well and with a smile on their faces! Singing creates a real spirit of cooperation and solidarity." The public performance included a variety of pieces ranging from popular music to works from the military repertoire. The 40 musicians of the Royal 22e Régiment Band will be joining the choir for a second concert on August 15 in Lévis, and a third concert for Christmas is a possibility. The success of this initiative has exceeded all expectations. Is the choir here to stay? "It all depends on what the choir members will want when the troops return from their deployment," says Sgt Archambault. So mark August 15 on your calendar and come hear the chorus join the Royal 22e Régiment Band for the traditional "Twilight Concert" (Concert au crépuscule) at Fort No. 1 in Lévis.
